Katukurunda is a small coastal parish situated in the Southern end of the Colombo district. It comprises the five Grama Niladhari (GN) divisions namely:
I. Katukurunda North
II. Katukurunda South
III. Egoda Uyana North
IV. Egoda Uyana Central
V. Egoda Uyana South
The parish is located in a highly populated narrow strip of land bordering Bolgoda river from East and South and the Indian Ocean from the West. Koralawella which was a part of Katukurunda parish earlier makes the Northern border. Within the limits of Katukurunda parish there are two Catholic Churches including St. Mary’s Church which was completed in 1881 and the other Church dedicated to St. Joseph Vaz which was built after 1990s. There are five Buddhist Temples, one Anglican Church, one Methodist Church and a Muslim Mosque in the area. There are five Government Schools within the parish limits namely:
I. St. Mary’s Primary School, Katukurunda
II. Sunanda Upananda Maha Vidyalaya & Primary School
III. Sugatha Dharmadara Junior School, Egoda Uyana
IV. Arapath Vidyalaya, Modera
The main livelihood of the earliest people in the parish were carpentry and fishing. A fishing anchorage is situated at the Southern extreme of the parish to support the fishing industry. Large number of sawmills and carpentry workshops exist in the area. In the past many of the Church activities were supported by the people engaged in these industries. Today a mixed population of businessmen, teachers, government servants, bank mercantile employees and those who are employed in foreign countries etc. also comprise a sizeable population of parishioners. The Catholic population of the parish exceeds 6000 individuals. About 45% of the parishioners belong to lower income group, about 35% belongs to lower middle class, about 15% belongs to the middle class and only 05% belongs to the upper income group.
The Katukurunda parish is divided into 09 Novena divisions (administrative units) according to the geographical distribution of Catholics within the parish. The 09 Novenas are further divided into Zonal units numbering to 24 zones in total. With the inauguration of the year of the Small Christian Communities in the year 2021 – 2022 these zones will be further divided into Basic Christian Communities consisted of 20 – 25 families per Basic Community.
