Seth Sarana-Caritas Colombo is the Social Action Arm of the Archdiocese of Colombo. It is the diocesan secretariat of the Archdiocesan Catholic Commission for Justice Peace, Human Development and care for the creation. Seth Sarana-Caritas, Colombo attains its legal status under Parliamentary Act No. 17 of 1983 which is an Act to Incorporate the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Sri Lanka. This Act is citied as the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Sri Lanka (Incorporation) Act No. 17 of 1983. Affiliated to this archdiocesan social apostolate are three groups consisted of housewives who are helped to attain self-employment in the Parish of Katukurunda. These three groups are guided to develop an income generating economy at home in order to overcome poverty. The motif of forming these groups is to develop an economic consciousness among those near to the social poverty line without being overly dependent on financial aid as grants and loans!
These groups are guided to stand up on their own with their own skills, talents and labor properly invested in income generating ventures such as agriculture, sewing, food production, trading, animal husbandry etc. The parish has taken a timely interest and have made an opportunity for self-employment for those who are willing to volunteer and work within the parish premises by initiating a compost fertilizer making project in the Church Garden. As the government has banned chemical fertilizer and a demand for bio-organic fertilizer is on the rise those having a low-income level can volunteer and develop a compost fertilizer generating plant within the Church premises to manufacture fertilizer to be sold for those who are having home cultivation projects in the village of Katukurunda itself. These ventures can be successful only with corporation and collaboration if at all they are to be profitable in the long run. Those who are interested in helping these Seth Sarana Groups of housewives in the parish of Katukurunda, Moratuwa are most welcome to share their expertise and knowledge by giving new ideas, teaching new skills, and having programs of such training to impart knowledge upon these young mothers who are seeking to strengthen their domestic economy and to develop their family with their own good will and honest effort.
