Since 1860s it is said that there had been a school in the village of Katukurunda with and within the Church and that it was overseen from the Convent in Moratuwa, from which Rev. Sisters have come to teach in the school. Even though it had been a mix school from the earliest of times two separate sections had been there for girls and boys to learn separately within the school itself. They were named as St. Mary’s Girls’ School and St. Mary’s Boys’ School of local language. Rev. Fr. Benedict Bondoni had been the patron of this school establishing it during his time of service in Moratuwa, 1863 – 1867. Some of the earliest written documents attest to the fact that the first name of this school had been St. John’s Local Language School. But subsequently the names have changed first as Katukurunda Roman Catholic Mix School and after 1978 St. Mary’s Primary School. Prior to 1960 this school was under the General Manager of Catholic Education as a school that received government financial assistance. But since then, it operates as a government vested Roman Catholic school. This school functions as a primary school that has grades from one to five for both girls and boys hence as a mix school.
