Moratuwa Kithudana Pubuduwa Community consisting of five discipleship groups in the Holy Spirit, namely, Kotelawelapura, Pannipitiya, Willorawatte, Panadura and Modera. In addition to the 18 villages of Moratuwa, Ratmalana, Pannipitiya and Panadura prayer groups too come under the purview of the above mentioned five discipleship groups of the Holy Spirit. The discipleship group of the Holy Spirit of Modera consists of five prayer groups namely, Moratuwella, Koralawella, Katukurunda, Egoda Uyana and Modera. Of these five, the last three prayer groups belong to the parish of Katukurunda, Moratuwa.

The Katukurunda prayer group, attached to the Katukurunda St. Mary’s Church was established in the year 1983 under Rev. Fr. Cyril Perera. It is with much regret we say that the pioneers who toiled enormously for the initiation of this charismatic movement are not actively involved in the upbringing of this movement anymore.

In the year 1996, a group of people from Modera used to join the weekly prayer sessions at Katukurunda. Nevertheless in 1997 with the guidance of the Kithudana Pubuduwa National leadership, an eight-week spiritual workshop (8 talks) was organized at Modera. Those talks enabled the participants to enlighten themselves to bear witness to the Catholic faith at a higher level. Finally, around 25 people from about 8 families got committed at the commitment service held at the Queen of Angels Church, Katubedda, Moratuwa, proclaiming that ‘Jesus Christ is the Lord in our lives’. Another similar commitment service was held at St. Joseph Vaz Church, and more parishioners of Katukurunda got committed at this service.

The feast of the Pentecost held at Sri Prashansaramaya, Ragama, was indeed a new spiritual experience for all of us. Especially the night vigil, throughout which we were able to experience the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit, strengthened our faith. A prayerful lifestyle driven by simplicity and giving more time to read and reflect on the scriptures with constant awakening to the guidance of the Holy Spirit is part and parcel of this spiritual journey. We are privileged to thank and praise God not only in success but also in our failures too. These are some of the characteristics of Kithudana Pubuduwa. Even though people get committed in hundreds, at present there are only a handful of members at our weekly prayer sessions.

It is not that we selected this path, but God Almighty chose us for this journey in the Holy Spirit. The ones who are journeying only know the immense power and the value of this charismatic movement.

  • A monthly periodical in all three languages, carrying the daily readings and reflections is being distributed among 160 (approx.) parishioners of Katukurunda.
  • Weekly prayer meetings are held at Katukurunda, Egoda Uyana and Modera.
  • On the first Sunday of the month, the community day is held in discipleship group level, and those meetings are conducted by a preacher appointed by the National Level.
  • The same good news is shared islandwide at these meetings.
  • In the year 2018, we were able to visit almost all the catholic houses in Modera by following the footsteps of St. Joseph Vaz (Juse Vas Mehewara nam wu kriyanwithaya). As a result we were able to attract more people for the Sunday Mass and more children to the Sunday School.
  • Above all we also pay more attention to intercessory prayers seeking solace for many people who are suffering in our country, and the whole world at large.
